こんにちは、メンタルアップカウンセラーの竹内宏行です。
五月となり、新年度を迎えてから一ヶ月ほど経ちましたが、「五月病」といわれるように、新しい環境に適応することに苦労されている方もいらっしゃるかと思います。
今回は、ちょうど五月病の季節ということで、「適応障害」についてお話ししたいと思います。
適応障害とは、入学、就職、独立、結婚、出産などといった環境の変化にうまく対処できず、勉強や仕事を続けられなくなるなど、日常生活に支障が出てしまう状態をいいます。
新しい生活環境の中で、最初のうちは気が張っているために何とか馴染もうと頑張るものの、次第に疲れがたまってしまい、どうしても目の前の状況に適応できなくなってしまうことです。
抑うつ気分や絶望感、不安やイライラ感などを覚え、その結果、不登校や出社拒否、引きこもり、また、対人関係でのトラブルなどを起こしてしまう場合もあります。
その原因は、環境の変化からくる明らかなストレスによるもので、もともとストレスに弱いタイプの人や、心の傷つきやすい人に多く見られるといわれていますが、適応能力の高い人でも、過度なストレスによって適応障害を起こす場合もあります。
また、適応障害の改善には、カウンセリングなどの心理療法を受けながら、不安感やうつ状態の軽減のために補助的に薬を服用したりもします。
適応障害は、その原因となるストレスがなくなれば次第に回復していくといわれています。
しかし、その後の生活の中で、また同じように大きなストレスを伴う環境の変化（人生の節目）を迎えた際に、再び適応できずに苦しむことも予想されます。
そのような点からも、日頃からストレスとうまく付き合う方法（ストレスコーピング）を身につけておきたいものですね。
生きていく中で、ストレスをなくすということは不可能に近いでしょうが、ストレスコーピングを身につけ、また、そのレパートリーを増やしていければ、大きなストレスを感じた際にもうまく対応することが可能かと思います。
最近、よく耳にする「ストレスマネジメント（ストレスとうまく付き合うこと）」という考え方や、心の健康の維持・向上という意味からも、予防的な効果のあるカウンセリングのご利用をお薦めいたします。

@Markus I get your drift on where you were going there. I often think of my past and use it as a means to analyze where I am and where I want to get to. Where I struggel is balancing it all out. How do you guys balance things out?
